I had another post I was working on but this was just too cool to put off. Seriously, probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It might not be all that big of a deal to anyone else, but it’s definitely high on my list.
Alright, I’ll start at the beginning. A couple days ago I read a post about how Scrivener (the writing program I use) can format to different ebook types. I started playing around with it and got really frustrated. To format for Kindle you have to download the KindleGen program from Amazon, then go back and link Scrivener to the program before it’ll work right. I’ll probably do another post specifically on that process later, it was kind of a pain.
So, I got all that set up and went back to trying to compile the manuscript for Kindle. It asked what I wanted to put for the cover, so I messed around for a while and made up a draft cover. I did the drawing by hand, edited it on the computer and did the formatting (1:1.6. Best for Kindle is 2820 x 4500 according to their site, that’s what I used).
Once I had all the files set up in the compile window, I hit the button and out popped a .mobi file. Then, all I had to do was plug in my kindle, move the file over and there it was!
My Kindle Fire
How cool is that? I turn on my kindle and it has “New: Larry’s Dead” right on the front, just like all the other books. I was just playing around, but it really made me realize that that publishing is not only possible, it’s realistic, and it’s just around the corner if I keep working at it.
Larry’s Dead is definitely not ready for publication, it’s barely novella length and I haven’t even done a full edit yet. I was kind of at a stopping point with “Part 1” when I started playing with the formats. Now, I’m reading my draft on my kindle.
I’m ridiculously, ridiculously excited! Technically, I could go on Amazon right now and have that published in about 5 minutes, as is. Obviously, I’m not going to do that because it’s not ready, but it’s publishable right now.
I keep looking at it like… “Wow, I made that.” And I mean, I made all of it. I wrote it, formatted it, arranged it, and made the cover. That’s 100% me on the kindle.
Yes, definitely one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I’m sure it sounds cheesy to all of you published authors out there, but this is the first time I’ve seen something that I’ve done like this. Now, I’m looking forward with great anticipation towards having a book really out there.
